What is a Parish Vocation Fair?

One opportunity that CAVA offers and will help organize is the Parish Vocation Fair. The Vocation Fair provides an opportunity for parishioners to learn about vocations to religious life and the priesthood as well as to become more familiar with some of the religious communities that minister in the Archdiocese. Click here for the flyer.

How to get started:
  1. Decide to hold a Vocation Fair & where it could be held in your church/parish hall.
  2. Contact CAVA to set up a date
    • Phone: 312-534-5240
    • or
    • E-mail: CAVA@archchicago.org
    • Let us know about how many tables could be available for displays
  3. Advertise the Vocation Fair in parish bulletins, announcements, school/religious ed memos, etc.
  4. Provide a table and chair for each vocation director attending
  5. Provide donuts and coffee for parishioners and guests [or we can bring the donuts! Just let us know.

Many parishes are blessed to have active Serra Clubs at work in their communites. Often Serran members in a parish will take the lead in forming the Parish Vocation Committee and integrate it.

Some Practical Things a Parish Vocation Committee Can Do

(Don’t forget to ask your Pastor’s advice and get his blessing on the projects you would like to initiate in your parish.)

Parish Publications

-print a vocation story in bulletin or as an insert to it

-publish the names of priests or religious from your parish

-have a vocation corner in the bulletin

Liturgy/Worship Committee

-general intention for vocations on a weekly or monthly basis.

-have a special liturgy on/for vocations as a theme

-have those who take communion to the homebound, bring a vocation

prayer to them to say during the week

Bible Study/Prayer Groups

-pray by name for those to be confirmed (get names from school or

             religious education director)

-study/pray with the scripture stories of the call of various persons

-invite a religious or ordained person to talk to your group about their

             vocation

Adult Education

-invite a speaker to talk on the meaning of baptism and the theology of call

-have a panel of religious and priests share about their lives

Parish Council

-budget for vocation activities on a regular basis in the parish by/for

             various groups

-begin/close meetings with a prayer for vocations

 Parent Groups

-start meeting with a vocation prayer

-invite CAVA to present Homemade Vocations (encouraging vocations in our homes)

Youth/Young Adult Ministry

-spend a meeting on a specific vocation topic; ie., priesthood, religious life,

             marriage, single life

-plan a service project with a religious community

CCW, K of C, Holy Name Society, Altar and Rosary, etc.

-invite a priest, brother or sister to speak to the group

-have a holy hour to pray for vocations to priesthood and religious life

-help the parish sponsor a vocation fair in the parish on a Sunday
