Taizé  (noun)  Tai· zé | \ tā-zā \

The Taizé Community is an ecumenical monastic order in Taizé, Saone-et-Loire, Burgundy, France. It is composed of more than one hundred brothers, from Catholic and Protestant traditions, who originate from about thirty countries across the world. It was founded in 1940 by Brother Roger Schutz, a Reformed Protestant.

The contemplative worship practices of the Taizé community are being incorporated in a wide variety of churches. A Taizé worship service involves sung and chanted prayers, meditation, a period of silence, liturgical readings, light, and icons. There is no preaching. The prayers consist of “short chants, repeated again and again,” according to an introduction in a Taizé songbook. These chants or mantras help one center more fully on God.
